Origin
Peri peri Masala, also known as Piri Piri, traces its origins to the regions of Southeastern Africa, particularly Mozambique and Angola, where the African Bird’s Eye Chili (the main ingredient) grows wild. The name “Piri Piri” means “pepper pepper” in Swahili.
This spicy chili and its masala (spice blend) became popular through the Portuguese explorers and colonizers during the Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries.
